about gut
General Use Type (GUT) is a type foundry and consultancy based in Singapore. GUT is driven by the desire to provide high quality fonts for general use across different scripts; providing a seamless and script-agnostic experience across translations and mediums. GUT aims to develop(ing) multi-script support for the national languages of Singapore as well as ambitions for regional Southeast Asian scripts.
General Use Type is run by Damien Chong, a graduate from the Master's in Type Design programme at the University of Reading. He has since built an extensive portfolio, from speaking at BITS and Typelab @ Typographics to collaborating with international type foundries such as Hanyi Fonts and Blaze Type. His work has also received a Special Mention at the 13th Granshan Type Design Competition, as well as various local and international features.
Currently, Damien is a part-time educator at the University of the Arts Singapore, where he runs and facilitates the Type Design Intensive Singapore (TDi-S) short course.
